Maximize Natural Light in Your Home with Top Window Styles

The more natural light your windows channel into your home, the bigger your interior will look and feel. So while you’re window shopping for your replacements, as you note the energy efficiency, aesthetics, and style your new windows will add to your home, make sure you explore which types will deliver the most natural light to your home.

Read on to discover which styles will let the natural light come teeming into your space.

Window Features That Bring in the Most Natural Light

Picture Windows

Floor-to-ceiling picture windows are about as good as they can get when it comes to the amount of sunshine they will welcome into your home. While picture windows are fixed (they don’t open or close), they benefit you most with their expansive views—along with the abundance of natural light they contribute to your space.

Transom Windows

These (usually long, slender, rectangular) windows are placed above your existing windows and below your ceiling. They come either fixed or operable, and their main purpose is to let natural light come flooding into your home. Although it’s uncommon, some homeowners even place these on interior walls so light can travel from one room to another.

Bay Windows

Multiple windows grouped together as a unit make up bay windows. They usually begin with a large (fixed) picture window in the center, and continue with a smaller (operable) window on each side of it and set on an angle—capturing outdoor light from a variety of directions. These work perfectly as a breakfast nook, reading nook, or place to relax in your master suite.

Bow Windows

Similar to bay windows, bow windows are a set of at least four windows placed on a curve in your home. Their ability to seize natural light will delight you as they brighten up your family room, formal living room, or kitchen.

Double-Hung Windows

Classic double-hung windows deliver natural light throughout your home. Install several in a row, and you’ll create a space filled with delightful, refreshing light.

A feature many homeowners love about double-hung windows is their ability to help fresh air circulate in your home. Their top sash can open downward, and their lower sash opens upward. When you open the window both ways simultaneously, your warm indoor air will exit out the top, while cooler outdoor air invades your space through the bottom.

Single-Hung Windows

Traditional single-hung windows offer an abundance of natural light, particularly when you install a row of these in a hallway or in your family room or living room.

More cost-effective than double-hung windows, single-hung windows open only from the bottom up. They are simple and have minimal parts, which contributes to their reputation for low maintenance.

Casement Windows

Gorgeous casement windows have a hinge on their side and open outward with a crank. Their streamlined sash and slim frames allow a larger glass expanse, delivering greater views and more natural light in your home.

Stylish, trendy, and practical, you can’t go wrong with classy casement windows. They are able to accommodate large areas, giving you a plethora of natural light and refreshing breezes to lift your home’s atmosphere.

Garden Windows

This dual-purpose window will deliver ample natural light into your living space while creating a small greenhouse that projects out (on three sides) from your home where plants can thrive. They come with and without a crank to bring in some fresh breezes while you enjoy the sunshine.

Hopper Windows

If your basement is in need of natural light, a hopper window may be the perfect solution. It opens with a turning crank, but (unlike casement windows) it opens downward or upward.

Sliding Windows

Looking for more natural light in your home? Sliding windows may be the perfect solution. Their simple design leaves plenty of room for “glass real estate” so you can enjoy breathtaking views of the outdoors while you usher in plenty of refreshing natural light.

Sliding Glass Door

While it is technically a door, it functions as a window too. A floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door adds natural light while delivering a smooth transition to your backyard.
